On August 27, at the second Workers' Cultural and Sports Festival—and its accompanying vocal competition finals—hosted by the Nantong Municipal Federation of Trade Unions, Tongfu Microelectronics’ trio rendition of "By the Lakeside of Baikal" won the first-place prize. Behind this prestigious achievement were Gu Yuanpeng, Chen Jianrong, Zhang Leilei, and others who braved the scorching heat and relentless summer temperatures, tirelessly rehearsing time and again. Due to the unique challenges posed by the pandemic, this year’s vocal competition was anything but smooth, facing numerous twists and turns along the way.
The preliminary competition, originally scheduled for June 23, saw the three of them squeezing in rehearsals at their teacher's studio after work hours. However, due to evolving pandemic conditions, the preliminaries were temporarily suspended. In early July, the municipal trade union announced that participants would now compete via video submissions. Despite having only half a month without training, they immediately sprang into action once more. At that time, Zhang Leilei had just been discharged from the hospital and wasn’t yet fully recovered physically, but he joined the intense rehearsals without hesitation. During rehearsals, they transformed the second-floor rooftop laundry room into their practice space, bravely tackling practical challenges like the limited area while pushing themselves to keep going through sheer determination.
Before recording the preliminary video, they reached out to their teacher to discuss everything from accompaniment and filming to costumes—striving for perfection at every step. "Ten minutes on stage require ten years of practice offstage." Thanks to their hard work, the preliminary video smoothly advanced to the finals, leaving everyone beaming with joyful smiles. Leading up to the final round, they rehearsed daily from 4:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., losing count of how much sweat they shed or how many times they practiced walking the runway and harmonizing together. But whenever something felt less than perfect, they simply started over—determined to give it their all, driven by a single, unwavering goal: to win for Tongfu!
On the afternoon of the 27th, during the final round, the trio effortlessly shook off their pre-performance nerves. As Gu Yuanpeng began to sing, he immediately captivated both the judges and the audience. Their confident and seamless performance, coupled with the stunning stage design, earned them a score of 9.67—and secured the first-place prize in the competition.
All of everyone's hard work and dedication are etched onto this gleaming trophy. While the achievements belong to the past, the spirit of perseverance remains deeply imprinted in our hearts. Moving forward, may Tongfu Micro-Electronics & Vocal Music Association inspire more music enthusiasts to dive into fresh creations and achieve even greater success.
